Bhutan Sustainability Exhibit

January 2020-April 2020

  • Bhutan, a country located in southeast Asia, remains to be the sole nation producing carbon-negative emissions.

  • By making changes to the top 3 carbon-emitting processes: transportation, electricity, and industrial production, cities would be able to reduce their emissions and carbon footprint.

  • As a team of 6, we created a museum exhibit for the Museum of Science in Boston to teach 4th graders about this issue in a way they will be able to learn in their own capacity.

However, making the change to go green, implementation costs, and changing the current process would be expensive for a city to undertake. Bhutan specifically incorporated policies such as allocating land use and changing public transportation leading to a clear difference in carbon emissions.

Ideation

Duncker Diagram

The ideation process consisted of individual as well as group, user/client research, and brainstorming sessions. As a group, we first came up with as many possible topic ideas as we could, writing them down on the whiteboard. A Duncker Diagram was then created to consolidate multiple ideas and formulate a problem statement

Inspiration

Inspiration for designs was taken from concept images. This concept image is based on an exhibit in the Museum of Science in Boston; it demonstrates the idea of a sustainable home, where children are able to make certain choices that lead towards an environmentally friendly lifestyle. Similarly, the design should incorporate a hands-on exhibit where children are able to make their own choices toward creating a sustainable country. The design will not incorporate references to children’s movies or books but will embrace the Bhutanese culture and teach children about the policies Bhutan implemented.

Drawing

After evaluating the individual designs, a final group drawing was established using AutoCAD.after evaluating the individual designs using a Kepner-Tregoe Decision Analysis Chart, a final group drawing was established via AutoCAD.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the project was cut short actual model could not be constructed or presented at the Museum of Science in Boston. However, a wiring diagram was produced and theoretical design changes were conveyed.
